How to work with a diversity, equity, and inclusion consultant. CHEAT SHEET

As you may know by now, Advantage Health Now is a healthcare consulting firm. One of the “things” we consult on is diversity, equity, and inclusion (#DE&I). I know DE&I is very popular right now because inclusivity is the order of the day. With that said, this blog post will give organizations that want to partner with organizations like AHN for DE&I a little cheat sheet on how to succeed in this space.

  1. Trust your consultant! When you reach out to the subject matter expert, know that they are a boss in this field and are confident in the plan they’ve laid out for you.

2. Respect their expertise. #DE&I is not easy work and often leads people into an uncontrollable space. Although the conversations you’re having may be challenging, trust the process and know that their goal is to deliver you an equitable outcome.

3. Pay them! Oh yes, DE&I professionals are a costly INVESTMENT. We are an INVESTMENT. You’re paying for our credentials, expertise, credibility, and so much more. This investment in inclusivity is worth every dollar.

These three tips will help get you started on your journey of looking for the right expert. Make sure as you search, you’re not looking for someone or an organization that will help you check a box or give you the opportunity to have the, “we hired a DE&I consultant firm so we’ve done enough.” No, get ready to get in the trenches and do the work while trusting the process.
